Rules + Regulations

The Future Leader of Alberta Scholarship is presented by Credit Unions of Alberta and Alberta Central. This Scholarship provides an opportunity for any Alberta-based student to apply for funding to put towards their educational goals.

One Scholarship of $5,000 will be awarded a legal resident of Alberta entering any year of study at a post-secondary institution, including undergraduate and post-graduate degrees.

Please note that for 2024, only the first 50 applicants will be accepted following the scholarship opening date. We encourage all applicants to apply as early as possible.

Eligibility Criteria

All applicants must be:

  • Legal residents of Alberta.
  • At least 18 years of age (at the time of entry).
  • Students who are currently attending post-secondary, or who are enrolled and planning to start post-secondary in the 2024 calendar year.
  • Able to provide government-issued ID and their social insurance number (as part of the shortlisting and/or selection process) via secure communication channels.
  • Able to show proof of their Alberta residential address.
  • Alberta to show proof of their post-secondary enrollment or acceptance.
  • Able to open an account at an Alberta-based credit union for the funds to be deposited into.

Post-Secondary Institution Criteria

  • All applicants must be attending or enrolled in a post-secondary institution, such as a university, college, trade or vocational school.
  • All applicants must be in a diploma, degree or trade certificate program at this post-secondary institution.
  • Undergraduate and graduate, Master’s or PhD program are all eligible.
  • The post-secondary institution can be based anywhere in the world, including international programs.
  • Continuing education programs are not considered eligible.

Exclusions

The following are not eligible for the Future Leader of Alberta Scholarship:

  • Applicant is a previous or current employee of Alberta Central (please note that children of Alberta Central employees are welcome to apply for the Alberta Central Future Leader Scholarship outlined here);
  • Applicant or applicant’s family member is in any way affiliated with a Alberta credit union as a employee, vendor or supplier (please note that children of credit union employees are welcome to apply for the
  • Alberta Central Future Leader Scholarship outlined here);
  • Applicant has a criminal record or is listed on any Canadian or United Nations sanction list;
  • Applicant is under bankruptcy protection or has judicial liens or attachments; and
  • Applicant has previously won an Alberta Central Grant or Scholarship (including the Women in Ag Grant, Big Future Innovation Grant, Future Leader of Alberta Scholarship and/or other Grants).

Conditions of Acceptance

Successful recipients of the Future Leader of Alberta Scholarship will be required to submit a photo and/or video and a brief written response as to what it means to receive the Scholarship that will be shared on Alberta Central’s internal and external digital properties and social media channels.

Successful recipients will also need an Alberta credit union account and will be required to sign an agreement affirming compliance with these Rules + Regulations and consenting to the disclosure of their personal information to Alberta Central in order to be granted funds.

Funds will only be issued to an existing or new Alberta credit union account. Successful recipients may also be required to securely share their Social Insurance Number for tax purposes before funds will be issued.
