The Future Leader of Alberta Scholarship is presented by Credit Unions of Alberta and Alberta Central. This scholarship provides an opportunity for any Alberta-based student to apply for funding to put towards their educational goals.
One scholarship of $5,000 will be awarded a legal resident of Alberta entering any year of study at a post-secondary institution, including undergraduate and post-graduate degrees.

What is the Future Leader of Alberta Scholarship?
The scholarship provides a Alberta-based student who is attending or enrolled in post-secondary for 2024 to apply for funding to put towards their educational goals.
What is the amount of the scholarship?
We are awarding one scholarship of $5,000 which is deposited into a account at the students’ local Alberta credit union.
Who is eligible to apply for the scholarship?
Any Alberta-based student entering or returning to a post-secondary program of study is eligible to apply. Please see the full eligibility criteria captured under our Rules + Regulations here.
How do I apply?
Apply using the online form. The form link will be posted once the Scholarship launches for 2024. Please note that due to demand, only the first 50 applicants will be accepted.
What if I am not one of the first 50 applicants?
Due to high demand, only the first 50 applicants will be accepted, after which the form will close. We encourage applicants to apply as early as possible.
How do I know if I meet the definition of “Alberta-based”?
The scholarship is open to any legal resident of Alberta who can provide an Alberta mailing address and will be able to deposit the funds at a Alberta credit union.
The post-secondary university, college or school does not have to be located in the province of Alberta, but the student must be a legal resident of Alberta. If the student is attending school in another location, this would be where the student resides when they are not attending post-secondary (primary address).

What type of post-secondary programs are eligible?
Any university, college or school that grants post-secondary credentials including degrees, diplomas and/or trade certificates would be considered eligible. Both undergraduate and graduate studies are also eligible to apply, however, continuing education programs are not eligible.
The post-secondary institution can be located anywhere in the world as national and international programs are eligible.

If I want to go to post-secondary but I am not enrolled yet, can I still apply?
Only current students, or students who are enrolled in post-secondary and set to begin in the 2024 calendar year are eligible to apply. Grade 12 students and those who are considering post-secondary but not yet enrolled are not eligible. Please see the full eligibility criteria captured under our Rules + Regulations here.
What are the application requirements for the scholarship?
Complete the application form outlining identification requirements and answering the application questions found here.
Additional requirements such as identification and/or post-secondary school documentation may be requested following your application. All applicants will also be required to provide their Social Insurance Number via a secure communication channel for tax purposes only.
What can I use the scholarship for?
The funds can be used in any way that furthers your educational goals, for example to pay for tuition, books or other course materials.
If I am awarded a scholarship, do I have to pay it back?
No, the scholarship does not need to be paid back.
Is the scholarship taxable?
Yes, any monies received from the scholarship would need to be reported on your tax return the following year.
